There's a day for everything. They can be important, like International Women's Day or World Humanitarian Day. They can be fun, like International Mud Day or Talk Like a Pirate Day. As piano lovers, we're especially looking forward to this year's Piano Day.

What is Piano Day?

Piano Day is a joyful celebration of all things piano, both to celebrate the music of the past and to promote the development of the boundary-pushing piano music of the future. It's an inclusive day, welcoming piano lovers of all ages, standards and styles.

When? We celebrate it on the 88th day of every year – a reference to the 88 keys on a modern piano – and in 2023 it falls on March 29th.

Why? Piano Day was started back in 2015 by Nils Frahm, a composer and producer from our hometown of Berlin, known for his unconventional approach to piano.

“Why does the world need a Piano Day? For many reasons. But mostly, because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener.” – Nils Frahm

How can you get involved?

Listen. We have a wide variety of piano music on flowkey, in a range of styles to suit any taste, and it's all free to discover. If you don't know where to start, we post a piece every week on our Facebook page, so take a look there for some inspiration. Warning: You might fall into the wonderful rabbit hole of discovering new or old music!

In past years, people all around the world have organized concerts and other musical events to celebrate Piano Day. Obviously, things are a little different right now – but there are sure to be online events and livestreams to keep the spirit alive. Check out the official Piano Day website for more details about this year's celebrations and how you can (safely) take part in the action. 

Learn. We know that specific goals are great for keeping you motivated (more on that here). So why not use Piano Day as a target to learn something new, or master a piece you've been learning for a while?

If you're just starting out on your learning journey, we've got you covered. Most of the songs in our app have different versions available for different skill levels. We've marked them in green for beginner players, yellow for intermediate and red for advanced.

Play. What better way to celebrate Piano Day? Whether you sit at the keys with a song you already know, something you learned specially for the day, or simply improvising, play your heart out!

Then, if you want to spread the musical love, post it with the tag #WorldPianoDay (and #flowkey if you like). Of course, if you're not the social media type and just want to play for yourself and those around you, that's fine too.
